In the first months of 2023, the Clingendael Academy has conducted and facilitated numerous trainings to diplomats, civil servants, humanitarian negotiators, peace negotiators, mediators, business professionals and many others worldwide. We are very proud to support professionals in strengthening and improving their knowledge and skills needed to operate effectively in international and politically sensitive environments. We would like to offer you a glimpse of our training activities of the first half of 2023.

Ukrainian officials trained at Clingendael

Clingendael Academy received a group of high-level officials from Ukraine. They are involved in negotiations and coordination of some of the most important legislative areas for Ukraine’s harmonisation of EU laws, including energy, agriculture, transport and digital affairs. Clingendael guided the participants towards a comprehensive understanding of what EU accession entails. The participants acquired practical skills through an EU accession simulation, a session on EU interest representation for third countries, and a networking event with representatives of the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Humanitarians from earthquake-affected areas trained in Gaziantep

Humanitarians from North West Syria and Türkiye came together in Gaziantep to become more effective negotiators.The participants learned about the options they have to approach their negotiation processes with local authorities, non-state armed groups, donors and other organisations. They for example can apply different negotiation strategies and know how to analyse and explore the interests of their counterparts. Clingendael Academy conducted its foundation course in humanitarian negotiation skills in the Turkish and the English language, thereby ensuring that professionals from local organisations got the chance to participate in this important skills training.

Enhancing women's networks' skills in Eastern Sudan

Clingendael Academy collaborated with UNDP Sudan in March to train 27 members of a Women, Peace and Security Network in East Sudan. The training aimed to enhance the women’s toolbox of conflict resolution negotiation skills, enabling them to promote inclusive, just, and peaceful communities and address gender and regional power disparities.

A conflict-resolution lens on climate adaptation in the Lake Victoria Basin

Clingendael Academy organised its first-ever training on the nexus between climate change and conflict resolution. This was done in partnership with the Lake Victoria Basin Commission (LVBC) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and took place in Bujumbura, Burundi.

Law of the Sea Training for ASEAN diplomats

16 diplomats and officials from the ASEAN Member States and the ASEAN Secretariat completed the seventh edition of the Clingendael training programme on the Law of the Sea, in cooperation with the Netherlands’ Institute for the Law of the Sea (NILOS). The programme included lectures by NILOS experts and skills sessions by Clingendael trainers on intercultural communication, international negotiation, and scenario building.

Cyber security training for North Macedonia's security sector

Clingendael Academy is continuing its long-term cooperation on Defense Diplomacy with the Joseph Kruzel Training Centre (JKTC) in Skopje, North Macedonia. It started off in February of this year by providing a cutting-edge Defense Diplomacy training on International Cyber Security. The aim of this three-day programme was for participants to further their insight into new and existing cyber security challenges, explore avenues for international cooperation to mitigate cyber threats, practice with tools used in international governance processes, and make the link to Macedonian assets and capabilities.

Negotiation and consensus building training for Sierra Leone's political youth leaders

In the run up to Sierra Leone’s general and presidential elections, which are about to take place in June 2023, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Sierra Leone requested Clingendael Academy to provide two three-day trainings on Negotiation and Consensus Building Skills for political youth leaders in Sierra Leone. The trainings took place in the country’s capital Freetown, and follow previous trainings provided by Clingendael in Sierra Leone in 2021 and 2022.

Pre-deployment training for the Dutch national police

What do police officers need to know in order to work in international crisis management and peacekeeping missions? This question was central to the Clingendael Academy’s Pre-Deployment Training, which was organised at the Police Academy in Warnsveld, The Netherlands. During the 5-day training, a group from the Dutch National Police was trained, as part of a longer training programme organised by the ‘Team International Police Deployments’ (known as TIPU).
