Clingendael proclaimed Think Tank to Watch

The Netherlands Institute of International Relations, ‘Clingendael’, has strengthened its position amongst Top Think Tanks Worldwide (Non-US), according to the recently published Global Go To Think Tank Index 2016. The Clingendael Institute takes 22nd position among the 150 ranked think tanks (2015: 24th). Among West European think tanks Clingendael occupies 17th position. For the first time Clingendael was distinguished as Think Tank to Watch.

In the categories Top Defense and National Security and Foreign Policy and International Affairs, the Clingendael Institute respectively takes 41st and 39th positions. On a national level, the Clingendael Institute is by far the highest-ranking think tank in the Index.

Monika Sie, general director of the Clingendael Institute, on the global ranking: “I am very pleased that we have succeeded in strengthening our position in Europe even though the environment has become much more competitive. In close collaboration with various partners we not only provide high-quality research and consultancy for very different types of clients, but also a unique training philosophy. We aspire to further develop our public platform function, and feel encouraged by our significantly improved ranking for public engagement.”

The Clingendael Institute congratulates Chatham House, on their first position in the overall worldwide ranking, and is particularly happy to work together with Chatham House in several projects.

The worldwide acknowledged Index is published yearly by the Think Tanks and Civil Societies Program of the University of Pennsylvania. It is based on peer review and expert opinions. It collects its data through the reviews of over 6,800 think tanks and 4,750 experts’ think tanks, involved in politics, journalism, country and regional expertise as well as donors/commissioning parties of think tanks. Europe has over 1,770 think tanks. The Netherlands has 58 think tanks.
