In October 2019, 12 alumni from our humanitarian negotiation courses gained the skills to deliver a tailor-made two day training course to their colleagues. This course is especially designed by Clingendael Academy for our alumni.

Although Covid-19 disrupted some plans, three participants successfully delivered a training course in their field locations. Aid workers in Syria, Yemen and the Ukraine were introduced to Clingendael’s method of experiential learning. They practiced how negotiation concepts can provide structure in a preparation for a negotiation as well as practicing the use of certain techniques during a negotiation and working as a team.

Effects of the Training of Trainers (ToT)

At the end of the course, participants all increased their confidence and knowledge about humanitarian negotiations.

The training of trainers allows us to reach more aid workers, especially those who are less likely to travel outside of their country. The training of trainers forms a core element of how the programme strives to contribute to the capacity of humanitarian organizations.

We are grateful for the dedication of our alumni to support their colleagues and will continue to support their work where we can.
