Security and Defence
On 20 and 21 January 2016 the Clingendael Institute, together with the Netherlands Ministry of Defence, organised a high level Netherlands EU Presidency Seminar.
Both our report and the animated introduction can now be viewed here.
The seminar, entitled ‘A Stronger CSDP: Deepening Defence Cooperation’, addressed what the EU’s role as a security provider in a changed world implies for CSDP. High-level speakers, among which the Netherlands Minister of Defence, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, referred to questions such as 'What European defence is needed?', 'How to deepen defence cooperation?', and 'What instruments can be employed to ensure progress in defence cooperation?'.
Speakers and participants at the seminar included representatives from the national delegations, officials from the Commission, EEAS and EDA, national and EU parliamentarians, representatives from the armed forces, academics and think tankers. The seminar was held back-to-back with the informal meeting of Defence Policy Directors on 21-22 January.
