Connectivity was the buzz word before Covid-19 hit us all. The EU issued a communication setting out its principles for connectivity and signed a partnership with Japan. Both moves were regarded as a riposte to China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) which has been criticised by the EU and others as ‘an alternative model of governance.’ Covid-19 has delayed summits and meetings that might have advanced EU-Asia connectivity. It is still unsure whether the ASEM summit, which to have featured connectivity in the agenda, will take place in Cambodia in November. Meanwhile Josep Borrell has talked about the Asian century and the importance of the EU linking up with democratic countries in Asia. What does all this mean for the EU’s connectivity plans and those of leading countries such as Japan? Will the new EU budget recognise connectivity as a priority? And how will we connect with each other after Covid-19?
