The Process of Negotiations: Turkey on the way to EU Accession

On September 5, 2006, the Clingendael Institute had the honour of welcoming Minister of State in charge of Economy and the EU Chief Negotiator of Turkey, H.E. Mr. Ali Babacan,

On this occasion, Mr. Babacan delivered a speech entitled The Process of Negotiations: Turkey on the way to EU Accession.

Mr. Babacan received his B.S. degree in industrial engineering from Middle East Technical University, Ankara in 1989. In 1992, he received his MBA in marketing, organizational behaviour and international business at the Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University, Evanston, IL. From 1992 to 1994 he worked as an Associate at QRM Inc., Chicago, which specializes on financial consulting to the top executives of the major banks in the USA. In 1994, he acted as Chief Advisor to the Mayor of Ankara. In 2001 he became the Founding as well as Board Member of the Justice and Development Party. After the general elections in November 2002, he was elected Member of Parliament and was appointed as Minister of State in charge of Economy.

Since June 2005, Mr. Babacan acts as the EU Chief Negotiator of the Republic of Turkey.
