The threat of cyber operations, the geopolitical impact of energy markets, EU sanction policies towards Russia, the Iran nuclear deal, the success of IS, China’s overseas involvement – these are only a few of the many topical issues that are part of the programme of the Course International Politics (CIP).

The programme covers eight half-day sessions with a total of thirteen different lecturers. In each of the thematic blocs - Global Governance, International Security, European Union and Sustainable Development – some lectures give a broad outlook on the theme, whereas others dive into case studies of current international issues and their implications on international politics.

Multilateral and Multipolar

Prof. Jan Rood presented one of the  ‘outlook’ lectures as an introduction to the module Global Governance. He concluded that international order will increasingly be conditioned by the relations between the great powers. Conflicts in Ukraine, the Middle East and North Africa cause instability and rising tensions between the great powers. However, tensions often coexist with cooperation between powerful states. The international order is therefore most likely to be a fusion of a multilateral as well as a multipolar global order. The complete analysis behind his conclusions can be read in the Clingendael Monitor 2015.

Case studies

Lectures labeled as ‘case studies’ include for example the discussion the participants had with  Sico van der Meer: Will the Iran nuclear deal be concluded and what would be its impact? With Willem Post: What can we expect from the next presidential elections in the US? With Hans Wurzer: What makes IS so successful? Among many other topics.

Mixed group

This spring it is the first time that the Clingendael Academy offers an English edition of the CIP; a course that is being organized yet since the nineties. The English spoken CIP has led to a group of participants that is even more mixed than in previous years, as  internationals from The Hague and Brussels are participating now as well.

Interested in participating?

The Course on International Politics  offers a wonderful opportunity to become acquainted with international relations in a brief time frame. Interested in participating? Application for the (Dutch) CIP this autumn is still possible. For more information please do not hesitate to contact the course coordinator Mara van der Meer.
