Expanding the Network: West Africa and the Sahel
18 May 2015 - 17:00

May 12th, 2015For the first time, the Clingendael Academy has the honour to welcome a group of diplomats from West Africa and the Sahel.

Eighteen diplomats from Burkina Faso, Chad, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria and Senegal, together with one representatives from ECOWAS  have arrived in The Hague to take part in a 4 week training programme on  ‘Regional Cooperation, Peace and Stability in West Africa and the Sahel’.

Promoting Regional Cooperation

One of the main goals of this training programme supported by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs is to promote peace and development in a region that has been witnessing too many deadly conflicts in the past years. This will be done by increasing participants’ awareness of the utility of regional cooperation processes with regard to peace and stability and by offering the participants a platform to exchange knowledge and experience with other regional and international actors. Ultimately, this program will not only serve to promote regional, but also international cooperation.

The training programme will include lectures, roundtable discussions, expert meetings and working visits both in the Netherlands and in Brussels, as well as professional skills training sessions, all organised around four thematic modules, namely:

  • peace and security,
  • regional cooperation policies and institutions,
  • governance, democracy and the fight against organised transnational crime
  • and human and natural resources as instruments of peace and stability.

Bilingual program

One specificity of this course is that it will be held in two languages, English and French, with interpretation whenever needed. A lot of French can thus be expected to be heard in the Institute and the Clingendael park in the coming weeks.

Adding to a vast international network of diplomats trained at Clingendael Academy, the Academy is looking forward to exchanging knowledge and experience with these participants from yet another part of the world.
