Diplomatic Training for the "Eastern Partnership"
01 Jul 2015 - 14:31

In the second week of June a group of eighteen young diplomats from six countries from Eastern Europe and the Caucasus arrived at Clingendael for a six week diplomatic training programme. The Eastern Partnership Programme is a joint initiative between the European Union (EU) and the Eastern European partner countries Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine.

Building networks

The diplomats have been invited to participate in one training programme to stimulate cooperation amongst the member states of the Eastern Partnership and to foster relations with the Netherlands and the EU. During the course, Dutch and EU perspectives on the issues relevant to their region are being shared by a range of Clingendael and external lecturers. An example includes the attention given to the Association Agreements between three of the countries and the EU.

During interactive sessions the participants are given the opportunity to discuss different topics and gain enhanced diplomatic skills, such as in negotiations, intercultural communication and effective influencing. So far, the group has already enjoyed training sessions on network diplomacy, country branding and presentation and debating skills. Throughout the rest of the programme, they will learn more about developments in international security and diplomacy, public communication, economic development and sustainability in the region and the world.

We wish all the participants of the programme a pleasant stay at the Clingendael Institute and hope that this experience will serve as in inspiration throughout the rest of their careers.
