The case for restraint with Iran

Massive violence and repression in China's Muslim Far West have after four weeks pushed Iran's post-election crisis from the frontpages. European calls last week for new sanctions against Iran, including withdrawal of all 27 ambassadors of the EU memberstates, have died down. At the G-8 in Italy, where the Europeans were balanced by Presidents Obama and Medvedev and Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso, further condemnation of Iran was rejected in order to facilitate the resumption of negotiations on Iran's nuclear program. But as Willem van Kemenade argues, there is much more at stake.
