Security Challenges of a Global Nuclear Renaissance

February 19, 2009. The Clingendael International Energy Programme (CIEP) and the Clingendael Security and Conflict Programme (CSCP) jointly organise a conference on the upcoming review of the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) in 2010. Climate change and security of supply concerns in the energy sphere have caused for a resurgence of nuclear energy on the national and international agenda’s. However, a significant expansion of nuclear energy in the various national energy mixes will have an significant effects on the international regime that safeguards the peaceful use of nuclear power. Not only will the regime have to facilitate an expanding number of nuclear states, but also ensure that nuclear energy use continues to remain peaceful and secure. To address these global geopolitical and proliferation implications of the global nuclear renaissance, the Clingendael Institute organises a full day conference titled: “Security Challenges of a Global Nuclear Renaissance” on March 10th 2009, at the Huys Clingendael in The Hague.
