План подполковника де Хааса - NATO Officer presents plan for normalisation of Russian-NATO relations

June 14, 2006. Lieutenant Colonel Dr Marcel de Haas argues in the weekly Russian newspaper Nezavisimoye Voyennoye Obozreniye, that Russia and NATO should consider the sensitivities of the other side. To improve their relationship the Russian side should remove the anti- NATO entries from its security documents. NATO should be aware that the U.S. deployment of forces near Russia and the possibility of NATO bases in new member states are likely to affect mutual relations.

Military-operational cooperation can be implemented easier than changing political attitudes. If primacy is given to increased military cooperation, in due course such confidence-building measures will also result in improving political-strategic relations.
