New briefing on tsunami aid in Sri Lanka
March 24, 2005. The immediate aid response after the tsunami in Sri Lanka was effective, but the current picture does not look so bright. Aid was politicized and government policies with regard to rehabilitation remained unclear for a long time. Especially in the east of the country, an overdose of international aid has resulted in a lack of coordination, distortion of local markets and other adverse side effects. These are some of the conclusions of CRU's most recent note on Sri Lanka. It is based on field work by Georg Frerks (Wageningen University) and Bart Klem (Clingendael Institute) and complements the policy brief of January 2005.
