Gender and conflict
There is a growing understanding of the link between gender-inequity and the perpetuation of (violent) conflict in fragile environments. The call to address this link through gender-responsive policies and programs on the ground, however, poses the international community for considerable challenges.
CRU research aims to provide concrete input as to how to improve international endeavors geared towards increasing the gender-responsive nature of interventions in fragile environments by focusing on topics such as gender & state-building, gender & security and the impact of violent or problematic masculinities on (state-)fragility. In addition, it is the ambition of the CRU to apply a gender-lens to all its research, by putting an effort into further mainstreaming gender expertise within the CRU research team.
Gender research of CRU builds upon broad expertise in this domain. In a collaborative effort with the World Bank, for example, CRU has written the book ‘Gender, Conflict and Development’, which looks into ways for addressing gender in conflict-related interventions. Furthermore, gender research of CRU has resulted in concrete policy tools for developing gender-sensitive DDR programs.
