Country/ Regional Analysis
CRU researchers closely follow developments in various fragile states and regions, and regularly conduct analyses on important political, security and socio-economic issues at play. Ultimately, their research aims to enhance the understanding of these conflict situations, identify policy challenges and offer suggestions for international engagement. Countries under scrutiny include Afghanistan, Burundi, Colombia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Guatemala, Kosovo, Somalia and Sudan.
Over the years there has been a growing realization that, often, the problems faced by a country trapped in a vicious cycle of violence and underdevelopment cannot be understood nor properly addressed in isolation from the regional context. In these countries, failure to take notice of their neighbours’ actions and concerns is a recipe for ill-considered interventions. Therefore, due attention is paid to the regional dynamics underlying conflict in highly volatile regions, such as the Horn of Africa and the Great Lakes region.
