Expert workshop: Who should do what? Peace, security and development in the Democratic Republic of Congo.1 November 2010

On behalf of the Peace Security and Development Network, we are honored to invite you to an expert workshop on the Democratic Republic of Congo, November 1st, 2010. The PSD Network brings together various Dutch actors – knowledge institutes, NGOs, private sector, and ministries – to work on improved policies for (post-) conflict affected areas. The complexity of these so called fragile states causes the need for a multi dimensional approach. The PSDNetwork partners provides in this need not only by the diversity of the involved partners but also by the inclusion of multiple cross bordering themes as gender, security, governance, legitimacy, and economic development.

In order to build upon this diversity the workshop will bring together DRC experts from different (thematic) backgrounds focusing on one geographical context, looking into how the cooperation between the diverse local actors dealing with peace, security and development in DRC can be improved. The main objective is to generate insight in the interplay between state and non state actors and identify the opportunities and challenges for these actors to work more effectively together for a more coherent and effective policy. Throughout the day participants are requested to use their experience as a group, as a representative from a sector (policy, academic, private sector, practitioner) and as an individual.

As a base for this workshop a working paper is produced (shortly distributed among participants) with input from the working groups of the PSDNetwork. This paper will be the onset for the discussion about relations, prioritising, sequencing, overlap and gaps between the different fields of work involved in peace security and development in DRC.
