Expert meeting: The conflict in southern Kyrgyzstan - How to get the genie back in the bottle?Tuesday, 22 June 2010

On 22 June the Clingendael Conflict Research Unit organizes a small-scale expert meeting on the causes and consequences of the ethnic violence in Kyrgyzstan, entitled: "The conflict in southern Kyrgyzstan - How to get the genie back in the bottle?"

Key issues that will be discussed are the causes of the breakdown of governance and public order in southern Kyrgyzstan and the key actors profiting from instability and ethnic violence. The meeting will also focus on international responses, including the current state of play of international diplomatic reactions within UN, OSCE, EU and NATO and the humanitarian relief efforts by international organizations and Dutch NGOs.

On a broader geopolitical level participants at the meeting will discuss the risks to stability in Central Asia and possible scenarios for further ethnic unrest in the volatile Ferghana Valley, including the question of a military response by key regional actors such as the Russian Federation and the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), should the situation escalate. Aim of the meeting is to gain a better understanding of the current situation and to formulate policy recommendations towards the Dutch government on its approach towards Kyrgyzstan and towards the broader geopolitical considerations at stake in Central Asia.

To this end, CRU organizes a closed meeting which brings together a divergent group of experts, policy makers, researchers and NGO workers active in the region.
