Report Launch: HIV/AIDS, Security and Conflict: New Realities, New Responses September 22 2009
On Tuesday 22 September 2009 the final report of the AIDS, Security and Conflict Initiative (ASCI) will be launched at the Clingendael Institute. This global research initiative, a joint project of the Social Science Research Council (New York) and the Clingendael Institute, aimed at informing policy and programming by strengthening the evidence base and addressing critical gaps in knowledge in the fields of AIDS and security. The report looks at ways in which peacekeeping and humanitarian efforts may be better aligned with HIV prevention efforts.
In the ten years since, the UN Security Council drew attention to the deadly nexus linking HIV and security there has been both alarmism and denial over these purported links. In its report, the AIDS, Security and Conflict Initiative (ASCI) provides evidence for policy-making. Its three-year research programme demonstrates that HIV has important impacts on security, just as security crises and security institutions can influence HIV incidence, but that with good policy and appropriate programmes these challenges can be successfully overcome.
An expert panel organized with the Social Science Research Council and Utrecht University will discuss the research findings contained in ASCI’s final report. This event will provide a forum for discussion of ASCI’s research findings by contributing researchers and independent experts in the field of AIDS and security policy.
