Expert meeting: "Pakistan: analysis of a protracted crisis and its regional repercussions" 15 June 2009

Until recently the international community has been dealing with the Afghanistan crisis primarily by concentrating on problems and dynamics intern to that country. Regional and international factors have often been mentioned, but more as corollary than as stand-alone issues. Pakistan, in particular, has been regarded as one of the key regional factors impacting on the stability of Afghanistan, but that recognition has fallen short of paying appropriate attention to that country.
During the last few months, however, there has been a growing awareness about the need to understand and engage with Pakistan in a comprehensive way. The new US policy towards both countries and the 17 April donors' conference in Japan seem to confirm that trend.

Through this meeting the organizers attempt to contribute to the broad debate about Pakistan, its inner causes of instability, and its international dimensions. The meeting will also aim to give Dutch policymakers, academics and representatives of 'civil society' the opportunity to share expertise and opinions with Pakistani guests, analyze present political developments in Pakistan and discuss the implications for regional and international stability.
