The Lord’s Resistance Army – considering an international response 12 February 2009
On 12 February, the Clingendael Conflict Research Unit (CRU) and Pax Christi are organising a meeting on the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA). Last December, in the context of failing peace talks, the army’s of Uganda, Southern Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) launched a joint military offensive to neutralise this notorious rebel group.
This move spurred an escalation of violence in the DRC-Southern Sudan border area and has as of yet not resulted in the defeat of the LRA.
The objective of the meeting, which will be held at the Clingendael Institute, is to identify opportunities for the international community to contribute to a durable solution to the lingering problem of the LRA.
Among the participants will be representatives from the Netherlands Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Defence, the Clingendael Institute and several non-governmental organisations.
