CRU Seminar on African Security 16-17 Oktober 2008

On 16 and 17 October 2008, a delegation of the Institute for Security Studies, a leading African human security research institution and a cooperation partner of the Clingendael Conflict Research Unit (CRU), visited the Netherlands as part of a larger European tour. On this occasion, CRU and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Directorate for Sub Saharan Africa jointly organised a two-day seminar on African security issues.

During the first day of the seminar, hosted by the Clingendael Institute, the issue of Security Sector Reform in fragile states was discussed, as well as the progress being made by the African Union with regard to the setting up of a peace and security architecture. Taking place at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the second day of the seminar was dedicated to debates on the latest developments in the Horn of Africa with a particular focus on Sudan and Somalia, armed groups in the Great Lakes region and the challenge of organizing elections in fragile states.
