Consultancy
The Conflict Research Unit(CRU) conducts research on the nexus between security and development with a special focus on integrated/comprehensive approaches to conflict prevention, stabilisation and reconstruction in fragile and conflict-affected situations. Specialised in conducting applied, policy-oriented research and developing practical tools, the CRU aims to assist national and multilateral governmental and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in improving their engagement in these complex situations.
More specifically, the CRU offers the following activities: political-economy analyses (both country-specific and regional analyses); stability and governance assessments; SSR and DDR related assessments; and assessing and analysing the interventions of international actors in fragile and conflict-affected situations. The CRU has developed (analytical) instruments for conducting such analyses and assessments, and supports policymakers in developing new policy concepts and in promoting joined up approaches of developmental, foreign affairs, defence and other actors in dealing with the complexities of fragile and conflict-affected situations.
CRU staff can also provide lectures in their various fields of expertise. Any requests are to be directed to specific staff members or the secretariat. Furthermore, based on the outcomes of its research, CRU staff offer specific training programmes for policymakers and practitioners.
Being located in one of the most beautiful parks of The Hague, the Clingendael Institute is a sought-after venue for conferences and seminars. The CRU organises and facilitates discussions that are of direct interest to CRU research.
Activities are geared towards policymakers and practitioners active on the nexus between security and development. Research and training are therefore aimed to benefit Ministries of Foreign Affairs/Development Cooperation, as well as Ministries of Defence and other relevant Ministries, both in the Netherlands and in other donor countries. Activities are furthermore geared towards international organisations and (I)NGOs. The CRU offers tailor-made consultancies to any of these clients. Depending on the request, these services will be taken on by the CRU itself, in cooperation with its partners which include internationally-respected experts and research institutes, or with other staff of the Clingendael Security and Conflict Programme or the Clingendael Institute as a whole.
