Consultancy
The Conflict Research Unit (CRU) conducts research on the nexus between security and development with a special focus on integrated/comprehensive approaches on conflict prevention, stabilisation and reconstruction in fragile and post-conflict states. Specialising in conducting applied, policy-oriented research, linking academic research with policy analyses, the CRU translates theoretical insights into practical tools and policy recommendations for decision-makers in national and multilateral governmental and non-governmental organisations.
More specifically, CRU offers the following activities: stability assessments of specific countries/regions; governance assessments; SSR related assessments; and assessments and analyses of the interventions of international actors in conflict and post-conflict situations and fragile states. The CRU has developed (analytical) instruments for conducting such assessments and supporting policymakers in developing new policy concepts and in promoting joined up approaches of developmental, foreign affairs, defence and other actors in dealing with the complexities of fragile and post-conflict states.
CRU staff can also provide lectures in their various fields of expertise. Any requests are to be directed to specific staff members or the secretariate. Furthermore, based on the outcomes of its research, the CRU staff offers specific training programmes for policymakers and practitioners.
Being located in one of the most beautiful parks of The Hague, the Clingendael Institute is a wanted venue for conferences and seminars. The CRU organises and facilitates discussions that are of direct interest to CRU research.
The activities are geared towards policymakers and practitioners active on the nexus between security and development. Research and training are therefore aimed to benefit the Ministry of Foreign Affairs/Development Cooperation, as well as the Ministry of Defence and other relevant Ministries, both in the Netherlands and in other donor countries. Activities are furthermore geared towards international organisations and (I)NGOs. The CRU offers tailor-made consultancies to any of these clients. Depending on the request, these services will be taken on by the CRU itself, in cooperation with its partners in CRU's network of international respected experts and research institutes, or with other staff of the CSCP or the Clingendael Institute as a whole.
