Natural gas
The CIEP study group on natural gas will continue to elaborate on the research topics developed in the publication The case for gas is not self-fulfilling!. Many forecasts expect demand for gas to grow substantially. In The case for gas it is argued that to make this assumption come true, certain preconditions need to be met in order to facilitate the required investments in both production, infrastructure and power plants. According to findings in this paper, certain issues need to be addressed in more detail in order to come to a clearer understanding of future gas market developments. The future of gas: will reality meet expectation?, prepared by Coby van der Linde and Jonathan Stern for the International Energy Forum, further developed some of these issues. Specific topics currently in the focus of CIEP's discussions are the preconditions for realising large scale natural gas projects, regulatory issues, the future pricing structure in liberalised gas markets and the role of flexibility instruments such as storage. The discussions will lead regularly to the publication of papers and the organisation of seminars to discuss the issues with a wider audience.
