CIEP Briefing Paper: Japan’s latest nuclear accident
August 8, 2007. The world’s largest nuclear power station was hit last month by a massive earthquake. Extensive damage to the facility included radiation leaks into the sea. Earthquakes are part of everyday life in Japan, where nuclear energy is a core element of the country's energy strategy. In this CIEP briefing paper Jan-Hein Chrisstoffels explains how the most recent incident adds a new chapter to growing concerns about the safety of the country's nuclear programme and poses that policymakers will find it increasingly difficult to keep their plans for nuclear expansion on track.
