New CIEP study on the Geopolitics of the Chinese-Kazakh Oil Pipeline

In this study, Securing and Fuelling China's Ascent to Power; The Geopolitics of the Chinese-Kazakh Oil Pipeline, Susann Handke discusses the geopolitical aspects of the Chinese-Kazakh oil pipeline. The rationale behind its construction is examined from the perspective of both China's energy policy and the concern of the leadership over the security in the country's borderlands. The case of the Chinese-Kazakh pipeline can be viewed as an example for both China's energy policy and its recent policy approach to neighbouring countries. Due to the demise of the Soviet Union and growing volatility in the broader Central Asian region, China is trying to strengthen regional economic in order to stabilise the region. The paper argues that from a geopolitical and economic perspective China's increasingly proactive regional policy is changing the broader Central Asian region and will have a considerable and enduring impact on the region's development for years to come.
