Follow up: Moving beyond the stalemate: addressing the nuclear challenge by supranational means
April 25, 2006. In August 2005 CIEP published a briefing paper written by Ruud Lubbers on non-proliferation issues of nuclear weapons and the need to search for supranational solutions. Since then the director of the IAEA, Mr. ElBaradei has accepted the Nobel Peace Prize, while the nuclear programme of Iran re-emphasises the importance of international agreement on the management and governance of both the civil and military applications of nuclear energy. In a short follow up of his briefing paper, Ruud Lubbers reaffirms his earlier statements on searching for supranational solutions to improve on the current NPT regime and discusses some of the benefits of these solutions as well as obstacles and impediments.
