The interaction between gas and electricity on system level in Northwest Europe

The Clingendael International Energy Programme is pleased to announce that on March 16, the Energy Workshop “The interaction between gas and electricity on system level in Northwest Europe” will take place.

Since the 1990s gas is the fuel of choice in Europe for generating power due to technological breakthroughs and environmental advantages over other fossil fuels. Simultaneously, policy makers have tried to stimulate the use of renewable energy sources for power generation such as wind. In order to cope with the resulting volatile electricity supply, sources of flexibility will be needed.

Gas seems to be the preferred option inferring that the physical and contractual situation as well as regulation regarding gas infrastructure should be able to provide for the flexible supply of gas. This could also have implications for gas exchanges and the way balance responsibility is organized. Furthermore, we cannot ignore that other sources of flexibility such as market integration combined with electricity storage could be more suitable. This would mean a need for increased investment in the electricity grid, particularly interconnection capacity.

To explore these issues, N.V. Nederlandse Gasunie, TenneT and APX-ENDEX will present their views. Subsequently, we intend to have an informal expert-discussion on which problems could emerge and adequate reactions in terms of regulation and industry structure.

The workshop will start at 14.00 hrs and will end at 17.00 hrs with drinks. If you are interested to participate, please return the attached registration form before coming Friday 12 March 2010 by mail to lmeulman@clingendael.nl or fax: +31 70 374 66 88.

Please see the appended programme for more details.

The workshop will be held under Chatham House rules.
