CIEP - NGIZ Seminar on Energy and International Security
13 April

On Thursday 13 April CIEP in co-operation with the Netherlands Society of International Affairs (Nederlands Genootschap voor Internationale Zaken - NGIZ) organised a seminar on "Energy and International Security".

Changing geopolitical balances of power and economic relations between countries, as well as a growing urge to secure the supply of oil and gas have put "energy" prominently on the political agenda.

In recent years, awareness has grown that political and economic impediments can significantly limit the availability of oil and gas, while at the same it is acknowledged that demand for these products increases. The prospect of scarcity leads to worry and the latter is further intensified by pessimistic views and expectations on producing countries and the extent to which they can meet growing demand.

The recent advice by the Advisory Council on International Affairs and the General Energy Council Energetic Foreign Policy (Energiek buitenlands beleid) poses the question whether and if so, how, Dutch foreign policy and the EU's politics can add to energy supply security in Europe and in particular in The Netherlands.

Two prominent speakers, Prof. dr Rob de Wijk, Director of the Clingendael Security and Conflict Programme and of the Clingendael Centre for Strategic Studies and Prof. dr Coby van der Linde, Director of the Clingendael International Energy Programme have presented a broader context for answering this question and address the subject of how "energy" has become part of foreign and security policy.. The seminar was chaired by Prof Alfred van Staden, Chairman of the Board of NGIZ.
