Clingendael European Studies Programme CESP

Research

The research activities of the Clingendael Studies Programme focus on a broad variety of topical issues concerning the European integration process, with special emphasis on the effects of developments in the integration process on the position of the Netherlands within the EU and their impact on the Dutch EU-policy stance as to specific policy areas.

Within the research programme special attention is, firstly, given to the socalled 'grand themes' of the integration process, i.e. the further institutional and constitutional development of the EU, with particular emphasis on the European constitution, the interinstitutional relations and the issue of political leadership within the Union, the future enlargement of the Union, the EU's external relations within the framework of the European Neighbourhood Policy, and the further development of certain policy areas (i.a. Financial Perspectieves, Lisbon-agenda, Justice and Home Affairs). A second cluster of research activities refers to the position of the Netherlands within the Union and the way in which the Dutch government acts to influence decisionmaking in order to promote its interests in Brussels.

The results of these studies are applied in the training programmes. As final activity the research programme conducts tailor-made studies commissioned by external clients, in particular government.

The results of the research are disseminated through publications (i.a. the Clingendael Papers), reports, lectures and contributions to the training programmes, and media comments.
