Seminar Beyond the deadlock? Future perspectives on EU enlargement
29 November 2011
On the 19th of December forthcoming the European Council will sign the accession treaty of the Republic of Croatia, thus welcoming the 28th Member of the European Union. The negotiations with this state took much longer than expected. The pace of the enlargement process has slowed down considerably, which seems to become a general trend in the EU and in the (potential) candidate countries. Given the many obstacles on both sides we can even speak of a deadlock.
Hence the seminar on EU enlargement organized by the Clingendael Institute, could not have come at a better time. It aims to openly discuss the state of play in three panels: on lessons learned from earlier accessions (panel 1); on the pre-accession challenges of Turkey and Macedonia in the wider Balkan context (panel 2); and on the future perspectives (panel 3). After every panel discussion there is plenty of room for open debate.
