Crossroads of Diplomacy: New Challenges, New Solutions

In a new Clingendael Diplomacy Paper, Marija Manojlovic and Celia Helen Thorheim describe how the international political arena has taken on a new look during the last few decades. Whereas the term international relations used to be equated with diplomatic relationships between states, it now refers to cross-border relations between all sorts of actors including international organizations, regional governments, businesses and civil society groups. This may be a truism, but as a result academics are questioning the concept of diplomacy as a foreign policy tool and institution of international society, while practitioners are trying to get to grips with dizzying change.
