UN Reform and NATO Transformation: The Missing Link

November 2, 2005. A new Clingendael Diplomacy Paper by Dick A. Leurdijk focuses on UN reform and NATO transformation. In the early 1990s the United Nations and NATO started to cooperate with each other under the pressure of the disintegration of the former Republic of Yugoslavia, both before and after the signing of the Dayton Peace Agreement. Since then, both organizations have developed a dynamic relationship, which is characterized by different forms of ad hoc cooperation in the field, both in Europe, including Kosovo, and at the global level in Afghanistan, Iraq and Darfur.
