Course in Diplomacy and Regional Cooperation for Mid-career Diplomats from ASEAN and the ASEAN Secretariat

The Clingendael Institute was proud to host a two-week course for mid-career diplomats from all ten member states of ASEAN (the Association of South East Asian Nations) as well as the ASEAN Secretariat.

From 5 to 16 December, participants reflected on the biggest challenges and opportunities for ASEAN regional integration, honed their skills in international negotiations, and practiced public speaking skills through reporting and debating assignments. Participants discussed diverging national priorities for the 2015 ASEAN Community, the role of the Secretariat and the AICHR (ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights) and worked together in multi-national groups to prepare positions on ASEAN centrality and the rising importance of the EAS, the institutional evolution of ASEAN and the relative importance of its different regional partners.

Classes and visits to the institutions of the European Union filled out the programme, offering both comparative perspectives on regional integration as well as a chance to explore the relations between ASEAN and the EU in terms of trade, aid, and deepening political cooperation.
