Symposium: ‘Economic Diplomacy beyond 2010: Geo-economic Challenges of Globalization and economic Security’, 16 October 2009

On Friday 16 October 2009 the Clingendael Diplomatic Studies Programme and the Institute for Social Studies organize a public symposium which sets out to increase our understanding of recent and expected trends in economic diplomacy. Keynote speakers are H.E. the Minister for Foreign Trade of the Netherlands Mr Frank Heemskerk and Sir Nicholas Bayne of the London School of Economics.

The golden decade in which globalization, growth and ‘less government’ appeared to provide a recipe for welfare and reduced conflict ended abruptly in 2008. A number of crises and imbalances regarding food, the environment, energy, the financial sector and the ‘real’ world economy coincided. They not only exposed the lack of appropriate international governance and fragility of the global system, but also the consequences of geopolitical and geo-economic shifts that are underway. Emerging powers are essential for solving the climate challenge and increasingly influence scarcity and prices. Furthermore, they have become one of the engines of global economic growth. These developments towards a truly multi-polar system pose new challenges to economic diplomacy.

A two-day international conference will precede this event. Professor Peter A.G. van Bergeijk will present a summary of conference findings during this symposium.
