Seminar Japan: Repositioning in East Asia 21 November 2007

The continuing economic development of Asia is forcing Japan to reposition within East-Asia. In particular the increasing power of China in the region is a cause for concern in Tokyo. At the same time, domestic trends create uncertainties and anxiety among the Japanese. Examples are the ageing of the population and the perception of growing social inequalities. Domestic insecurities too will have ramifications for Japan's foreign policy and its position vis-à-vis Asian neighbours.

On 21 November 2007, Clingendael Asia Studies organised an expert seminar that set out to increase understanding of Japan's evolving regional and global position. In two afternoon sessions, CAS researchers Maaike Okano-Heijmans (CDSP) and Jan-Hein Chrisstoffels (CIEP) presented their insights on two important strategic challenges for Japan: 'Economic and diplomatic relations with China', and 'security of energy supply'. Jeroen Lamers (Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs) discussed Japan's position as an economic and financial powerhouse and the challenges and changes that it faces today. Furthermore, the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs officially presented its new mid-term strategic plan (2008-12) for Japan. Ample time was reserved for Q&A and discussion.

Professor Jan Melissen, Head of the Clingendael Diplomatic Studies Programme and CAS supervisor moderated the seminar discussions. The seminar was convened in Dutch.
