About
Clingendael Asia Studies (CAS) undertakes research and analysis on diplomacy, political economy, security and energy issues in or relating to Asia. Geostrategic implications of the emergence of China for the region as well as for Europe and the Netherlands are major points of interest. Clingendael Asia Studies responds to Asia's growing importance in international economics and (resource) security and at the same time reflects intensifying Asian-European relations in the public and private domain. CAS seminars and conferences provide a platform for discussion between representatives from academic institutions, government agencies, non-profit organizations, the corporate sector and others.
Clingendael Asia Studies aims to contribute to setting the agenda for Asia-related debates, both in the public and in the policy-making sphere. CAS researchers publish regularly on current affairs in Asia. In December 2009, the Clingendael Asia Forum was launched as an international online platform for debate among Asia specialists, including both practitioners and academics. CAS is keen to adapt its focus to developments in the region and to policy priorities at the (Dutch) national and European level, and to act as a bridge between practitioners and the academic world.
Clingendael Asia Studies is a joint initiative of the institute’s Diplomatic Studies Programme, Security and Conflict Programme and International Energy Programme, and is supported by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Research within Clingendael Asia Studies focuses on the following themes:
- Relations between Europe and Asia, seen from both an institutional as well as from a bilateral perspective;
- Economic diplomacy, or the use of economic instruments in foreign policy;
- Security issues;
- Diplomatic Strategies and soft power in Asia;
- Energy issues;
All CAS events and publications target a broad range of groups, including national and foreign experts and academics, stakeholders and representatives of the corporate sector as well as non-governmental organizations, policy makers and others interested in current affairs in Asia.
